Local Students Get $9,000 in Scholarships

Some $9,000 in scholarships awarded last spring and recently announced by the Farmington / Farmington Hills Education Foundation to help seniors continue their educations.

Scholarships and and recipients are:

Kay Briggs Memorial Scholarship: William Greig, now a student studying computer engineering at the University of Michigan.

Farmington Hills Police Officers Association and Grand Tavern Scholarship: Hannah Carleton of Harrison High School, now studying business at Michigan State University; Farmington High School student Katherine Truitt, who plans to study earth science at U-M-Dearborn; and North Farmington High student Airrion Wafer, who plans to study criminal justice at Oakland University.

Susan H. Zurvalec Leadership in Diversity Scholarship: Harrison High School student Abhijay Kumar, who is attending John Hopkins University, where he intends to pursue a career in medicine.

Joan MacKenzie Memorial Vocal Music Scholarship: Anthony Sharpe of Farmington High School and Margaret Merogi of Harrison.

Dan Lee Memorial Scholarship,: Sanyu Lukwago and Kristal Wilson.

David Roggenkamp, the foundation’s chairman, said the organization is able to offer the scholarships by partnering with several community organizations that share the foundation’s interest in helping young people further their educations, which he said can be financially difficult for many families.
