Melick placed third in the state in the same weight class last season.

Blue Devil teammate 125-pounder James Demember, 35-8, was eliminated from the tournament with two losses in his first two matches.

senior Preston Wetzel claimed his team's only win of the state finals.

Wetzel won a 13-7 decision over Gibraltar Carlson junior Jake Mydloski in the 152 pound bracket.

The senior scored most of his offense at the very end of the round. In round two, he hit two takedowns in the final 15 seconds to increase a one point lead to 8-3.  Mydloski closed the gap with two takedowns in the first 30 seconds of the third before Wetzel pulled away in the final 10 seconds of the round.

"I wanted it real bad," Wetzel said. "I didn't want to go home two-and-out."

He credited his coaches for pushing him at the end of each round; they helped him stay focused and aggressive.

Wetzel, who went 40-3 during the season, lost his first match by pin to Lowell's Andrew Morse 18 seconds into the contest and then was eliminated in his third match with a 6-4 loss to Allegan's Drew Huff.

His teammate 130-pounder Chase Roney was eliminated from the tournament after two losses in his first two matches. He lost both by pin.
