Trucker Stranded in Monster Buffalo Storm Calls Michigan for Help

Trucker's angry words about their supposed lack of responsiveness to what looked like a minor snow event baffled Genesee County road crew.

In defense of a truck driver who called Michigan authorities for help Wednesday morning, the monster storm that buried parts of Buffalo, NY, under an avalanche of more than 70 inches of snow was dizzying.

That could have explained why the angry trucker called the Genesee County Road Commission and demanded crews do something to help 50 some trucks that that had been stranded on the highway for more than four hours.

John Daly, manager-director for the Genesee County Road Commission, told The Flint Journal/MLive the call was nonsensical. It was snowing, but not in amounts significant enough to turn highways into parking lots, so he and the receptionist who took the call were confused.

“We’re kind of looking at each other like, what’s going on?” Daly said.

After a series of questions, they realized the trucker was trying to reach road workers in Genesee County, NY, which is just outside Buffalo. He had dialed 411 and was connected with the Michigan roads agency.

That, not the disorienting blizzard, explained the trucker’s hostility.

The lake-effect blizzard has crippled a small part of Buffalo and has killed at least seven people, according to CNN. More snow is on the way, with up to three feet more possible by Thursday. That could break a record for lake-effect snow events, according to the National Weather Service.

As for forecast for Genesee County in Michigan? The National Weather Service says light snow showers will continue overnight and into Thursday, with total accumulations – sorry, Genesee County, NY – of around half an inch.
