HAZEL PARK, MI — Police released the suspect in a fatal after-prom party shooting in Oakland County after a self-defense claim.
The shooting happened after 1 a.m. last Friday at a home in the area of Powell and Orchard avenues near Interstate 75 and Nine Mile Road in Hazel Park, according to police.
Officers found a 20-year-old Detroit man suffering from a gunshot wound outside a home and a 19-year-old Pontiac woman who had been shot a few houses down.
Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital where the man died, according to police.
The woman is expected to be ok, according to police.
Investigators believe the 20-year-old Detroit man pulled out a gun and robbed another person of their watch.
A bystander, who has a valid permit to carry a firearm (CPL), witnessed the robbery and fatally shot the 20-year-old, according to police.
It's unclear whether the suspected shooter will face charges in connection with the shooting. It is also unclear which prom or school the people involved in the party had attended.
Hazel Park city officials said a group of people rented out the house to host the after-prom party. They announced Monday a six-month moratorium on short-term rental, including Airbnb and VRBO.
Police ask anyone with more information about the shooting to call the Hazel Park Police Department at 248-542-6161.
