Arrest Made in Texas in Shooting of Ferndale Man

Police are still looking for two others involved in the Dec. 3 robbery in which a Ferndale man was shot twice in the head.

FERNDALE, MI – A man who fled to Houston, TX, after he allegedly shot a Ferndale man twice in the head earlier this month has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies.

Det. Lt. William Wilson of the Ferndale Police Department said in a statement that Somate Jalen Russell, 21, was arrested by U.S. marshals in Houston Thursday morning. Two handguns were recovered, but the investigation has not determined if they were used in the Ferndale shooting, Wilson said.

An arrest warrant charges Russell with attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and felony firearm. Wilson told Patch that authorities hope Russell will be extradited to Michigan within 10 days.

The victim’s girlfriend told police that she and her boyfriend were sitting in a car in the area of Hazelhurst and Wanda, where both live, when they were approached by two armed black males with their handguns drawn.

“The female victim said she thought the two men were going to rob her and her boyfriend, and the one suspect may have accidentally shot her boyfriend, panicked, and continued shooting while retreating,” Wilson said at the time.

The victim, whose name has not been released, remains hospitalized after surgeries. His injuries are no longer life-threatening, Wilson said.

Police are still looking for the other man, as well as a third man who is believed to have been driving a getaway car. Anyone with information is asked to call Ferndale police at (248) 541-3650 or Crime Stoppers at (800) SPEAK-UP for a potential reward.
