County Yanks Ferndale Eatery’s License for Health Violations

Health officer: County "needed to get their attention" on issues that have been "festering for years;" Como's has "really good first steps."

FERNDALE, MI — Como’s Restaurant in downtown Ferndale was closed Wednesday for health code violations, and could remain closed for anywhere from two weeks to two months, the Oakland County Health Department said.

The restaurant, located at Woodward Avenue and Nine Mile Road, was ordered closed after a hearing before the county Food Service Appeal Board. George Miller, director of Health and Human Services for Oakland County, told The Daily Tribune the Como’s had been working on reported problems, but didn’t make progress quickly enough to satisfy health officials.

Miller told the newspaper that issues at the restaurant have been “festering for years,” and county health officials “needed to get their attention,” so their license was revoked.

Problems have included some employees’ personal hygiene, cross contamination of food, failure to adequately cool foods before storage, leaving food out too long, and missing food expiration dates. Miller said the restaurant has hired consultants to help them meet health codes, which he called “ really good first steps.”

The county health department oversees 4,600 restaurants in Oakland County, and makes on-site visits twice a year. Few, if any restaurants, are ever closed, Miller said.
