Ferndale Schools Among County's Greenest

Three schools in Ferndale are among 193 in Oakland County being recognized this week for earning the Michigan Green School designation.

Representatives of the schools will gather at Oakland Schools in Waterford on Wednesday morning to receive an official Michigan Green School flag and a certificate signed by Gov. Rick Snyder.

Coolidge Intermediate, John F. Kennedy School and Roosevelt Primary are considered Michigan Green Schools. To earn the designation, schools must complete at least 10 of 20 "green" activities. Activities range from paper recycling to garden projects to the use of renewable energy. If they complete more than 10, they may be eligible for "Emerald" or "Evergreen" status.

Top schools this year are Keller Elementary School in Royal Oak, Royal Oak Middle School and Walled Lake Central High School.

Michigan Green School Emerald Status (these schools earned an additional 15 points for green projects)

Michigan Green School Evergreen Status (these schools earned an additional 20 points for green projects)
