Man Arrested In Oakland County Hit-And-Run That Killed Disabled Veteran: Police

A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly Oakland County hit-and-run crash that happened in November, according to police.

OAK PARK, MI — A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly Oakland County hit-and-run crash that happened in November, according to police.

Police said 71-year-old wheelchair-bound veteran William Mapp was hit and killed by a car that never stopped at 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 22 in the area of 9 Mile Road and Harding Street in Oak Park.

The crash was reported until 5:20 a.m. that morning, according to police.

Devin Asa-Armon Light, 28, of Southfield, was charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Investigators believe Mapp was in the roadway when he was hit by an eastbound dark-colored sedan, possibly a dark gray 2023–2026 Hyundai Elantra.

They later found an abandoned 2024 Elantra in Detroit that matched the suspected vehicle, according to police.

A "critical tip" then ultimately led to Light's arrest, according to police.

Police asked anyone with information about the deadly crash to call the Oak Park Public Safety Department 248-691-7447.
