Michigan Bomb Squad Responds to Ferndale Report

An object that looked like a pipe bomb was found in a Ferndale parking lot.

FERNDALE, MI – A cardboard tubular device with hardware attached caused some anxious moments in a parking lot near East Breckenridge and Woodward Avenue shortly after noon Friday.

Ferndale police responded to citizen’s tip about a suspicious object lying on the ground and notified the Michigan State Bomb Squad for assistance.

“It appeared the object might have been a homemade explosive device similar to a pipe bomb,” Ferndale Det. Lt. William J. Wilson said in a statement.

The bomb squad arrived and determined the object wasn’t an incendiary device and said it presented no danger to the public.

Wilson said police are investigating to determine if the item was left as a hoax or in an attempt to provoke a law enforcement response.
