Students at Ferndale's Roosevelt Primary School Sing, Walk for Peace
Ferndale music teacher Debbie Hillebrand said the annual Peace Walk in honor of MLK Day is a reminder of the importance of equality.
"Peace is the world smiling."
It's a lyric in the song that rang throughout on Friday afternoon as more than 450 students participated in the school's eighth annual in honor of Martin Luther King Day, and it's an idea that music teacher Debbie Hillebrand says couldn't be more true.
"We try to make our little bit of peace here," Hillebrand said of the event, which she has organized the past two years. "For us this is what it looks like to be peaceful."

As children walked through the halls singing about peace and love, each carried a different art project in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. - some carried cut-out doves, others carried photos of King with their own dreams written below his face. Some children's pictures stated they dreamed of becoming a teacher, a pastor or a soldier.
Hillebrand said the event reinforces the importance of equality.

"MLK had it right," she said. "We have to work on everyone being equal."
She said even though it's 2012, the idea still has meaning today.
"I have always believed this to be one of the most important things," she said.
Ferndale mom Erika Pratt, who has a first-grader at Roosevelt, said the Peace Walk is one of her favorite school events.
"I love this event," she said. "I think it's beautiful."
Pratt said she believes this type of event is what King wanted to see.
"Children, together," she said. "Our school is incredibly diverse and it's a point of pride."
