Suspect Crashes into Motorist While Fleeing Ferndale Police

Chase ensued after Ferndale police tried to stop a Travis Dwayne Lee for allegedly making an illegal turn.

FERNDALE, MI – A suspect who lost control of his vehicle and struck another motorist while fleeing police was apprehended on foot after scaling a 10-foot barbed wire fence Friday, Ferndale police said.

The suspect, Travis Dwayne Lee, 28, of Pontiac, was captured by Ferndale and Hazel Park police who were waiting in the yard on the other side of the fence. He faces two felony charges and one misdemeanor as a result, according to a Ferndale police statement.

The chase began about 7:20 a.m. Friday morning when a Ferndale police officer attempted to stop Lee for allegedly making an illegal turn on a red light at Woodward Avenue and Nine Mile Road.

Lee allegedly refused to stop his 1989 van and fled, speeding eastbound on Nine Mile. The officer attempted another stop at Nine Mile and Paxton, but Lee again allegedly refused to stop. Police said he ran a red light at Hilton, almost causing an accident, then continued eastbound until his van struck the other motorist’s vehicle, abandoned his vehicle and ran southbound on foot through neighborhood yards in the area of Troy and Nine Mile.

The victim’s car was severely damaged, police said, but she was not injured.

Lee was arraigned by Ferndale 43rd District Magistrate Kay Wilson, who set Lee’s bond at $16,000 on the charges of:

  • Third-degree fleeing and eluding, a five-year felony;
  • Resisting a police officer, a two-year felony; and
  • Driving with a suspended license, second offense, a one-year misdemeanor.
