Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. ArtPrize entry pays tribute to Day of the Dead (woodtv.com) — A striking Day of the Dead–inspired ArtPrize exhibit made from seeds and beans is now on display at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market, created by local artist Arturo Morales Romero. Residents can add offerings and messages to a growing community piece through Día de los Muertos on Nov. 2, with one installation planned to remain permanently on the second floor.
2. 'Wherever we go, we run into construction': Grand Rapids business owner feels impact of road work (wzzm13.com) — Drivers and shoppers in Grand Rapids are feeling the squeeze as ongoing construction on Southeast 28th Street has reduced traffic to one lane between Division and Kalamazoo, backing up cars and pushing some through business parking lots. Kaufman's Furniture Gallery and neighboring spots like Woody's Ice Cream remain open, but owners worry customers may avoid the area unless they plan ahead and approach from eastbound 28th Street.
3. Focus West Michigan: 9-30-26 Northland Drive Reopens Early (wgvunews.org) — Northland Drive in Plainfield Township has reopened far earlier than expected, easing commutes for many Grand Rapids–area drivers. A recent public radio segment also highlighted the Grand Rapids Chamber's effort to boost local shopping, a longtime Kent County medical examiner's transition, new cancer research from Van Andel Institute, and a visit by advocate Mike Utley to Mary Free Bed.
4. Court documents: Man tortured, assaulted girlfriend at his home in Grand Rapids (woodtv.com) — A Grand Rapids man has been charged with torture, unlawful imprisonment, and assault after court documents allege he repeatedly beat, waterboarded, and strangled his girlfriend at his home. The woman ultimately escaped during a trip to Woodland Mall, alerted family, and was taken to a hospital, while police later arrested the suspect and reported finding evidence consistent with her account.
5. AI is reshaping West Michigan's workforce — here's how local leaders are responding (fox17online.com) — Grand Rapids workers are seeing a sharp rise in job postings that require artificial intelligence skills, and local leaders are racing to help residents keep up. The Grand Rapids Chamber and Grand Rapids Community College are expanding training, certificates, and AI-focused programs so current employees and students can use these tools effectively and stay competitive in West Michigan's evolving job market.
