1. 5,000 Runners Expected At Grand Rapids Marathon (wgrd.com) — Grand Rapids drivers and residents should prepare for extensive street closures on Sunday, October 18, when up to 5,000 runners tackle the 23rd Annual University of Michigan Health–West Grand Rapids Marathon. The 26.2-mile course starts downtown at the David D. Hunting YMCA and winds through West Side neighborhoods, affecting key routes like Fulton, Leonard, Monroe, Wealthy, and Butterworth for much of the morning and early afternoon.
2. Loved ones say their goodbyes to man who died while fleeing ICE (woodtv.com) — Family and friends in Grand Rapids gathered Saturday to say goodbye to Mario Coronado-Juarez, who died in a high-speed crash after fleeing an ICE stop on the city's southwest side. Loved ones describe a community fearful of attending services due to ongoing immigration enforcement, while a GoFundMe and support from the Guatemalan Consulate aim to help his family back home.
3. Christina Koch's Spacesuit Is Headed Home to Grand Rapids Public Museum (sportsradio987.com) — Grand Rapids residents will soon be able to see hometown astronaut Christina Koch's spacesuit at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, honoring her role on the recent lunar flyby mission. Koch, who has roots in both Grand Rapids and Sparta, is also donating signed photos from the flight, joining fellow local astronaut Roger B. Chaffee in the museum's Veterans display.
4. BWC: Mich. deputies recover 4 vehicles stolen at once, rescue would-be thief from river (police1.com) — Deputies chased four stolen vehicles from Ada Township into Grand Rapids, ending with two crashes on the U.S. 131 S-curve and a suspect fleeing into the Grand River. Body camera video shows officers rescuing the juvenile from the water before taking both youths to the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center. The pursuit started around 3 a.m. on October 2.
5. Grand Rapids Public Museum's core exhibit returns after a two-year absence (wzzm13.com) — Grand Rapids residents can once again explore the Public Museum's core exhibit, "Anishinaabek: The Original People of This Place," newly reopened after nearly two years of renovation. The updated experience, co-designed with indigenous advisors, now uses immersive technology, contemporary Native artwork, and a "We Are Still Here" theme to highlight the past, present, and future of Anishinaabe communities across Michigan.
