Here are the top three stories in Grand Rapids today:

  1. Michigan House of Representatives lawmakers are calling on the federal government to officially recognize Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians in a new resolution. The state of Michigan currently recognizes the Grand River Bands. Most current members of the tribe currently reside in Kent, Muskegon, and Osceola counties. (HollandSentinel.com)
  2. The NAACP Grand Rapids Chapter held a March for Voting Rights event to commemorate the 57th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. The march was held on Sunday in downtown Grand Rapids at 1:30 PM. Bloody Sunday was initially planned as a day of peaceful protests regarding voting rights but resulted in the murder of several protestors crossing the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Alabama.   3. A man was shot during a Grand Rapids shooting on Sunday. The incident occurred on 28th Street between Englewood Avenue and Breton Road, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department. The department reports that no suspects have been identified or located at this time but anyone with information regarding the incident is being directed to contact Grand Rapids Police Department detectives.
