Alleged Addict Arrested in Grosse Pointe Farms Stabbing

Police: Daniel Clancy knew attacker who allegedly bound him with duct tape, beat him and stabbed him multiple times in the neck.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, MI –Police said Wednesday that a 49-year-old man has been arrested in Sunday’s brutal stabbing of a well-known interior designer outside his home in an upscale Grosse Pointe Farms neighborhood, police said Wednesday.

Daniel Clancy, 69, a nationally sought-after interior designer, was bound with duct tape and stabbed outside his home on Voltaire Place around 4 p.m. after he returned from a shopping trip at Costco.

Grosse Pointe Farms Detective Lt. Richard Rosati said the victim knew the suspect, and that the motive appears to be robbery. Police found evidence of a struggle inside Clancy’s home. A source familiar with the investigation told the Detroit Free Press the suspect was hospitalized Tuesday after overdosing on heroin.

Clancy remains hospitalized at St. John’s Hospital, where he was rushed Sunday in extremely critical condition. He was beaten and stabbed multiple times in the neck, but somehow escaped from the duct tape binding. He was spotted in a pool of blood on the sidewalk by a passing motorist, who called 911.

"I saw (Clancy) yesterday in the hospital, and the doctors say he's doing better," Rosati told the Free Press. "But he is definitely not out of the woods yet. He's in trouble, but he's alive."
