21st Annual Benefit on the Bay Raises $100,175 for Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Annual event raises more than $100,000 for Detroit-based Capuchin Soup Kitchen

The 21st Annual Benefit on the Bay, the fundraising event to benefit the Detroit-based Capuchin Soup Kitchen, raised $100,175 from the 2014 event. Organized by Mike Schodowski, Vice President of Sales of Auburn Hills-based Shelving Inc., all costs for the fundraiser are covered by Shelving Inc., ensuring all funds raised went to advance the Capuchin Soup Kitchen’s mission.

Held on a clear Friday evening at the MacRay Harbor banquet center along the shores of Lake St. Clair in Harrison Township, the 21st annual event brought the total amount raised since the first Benefit on the Bay in 1993 to $1.1 million to support Capuchin.

“The Capuchin Soup Kitchen is a place that’s been close to my heart for many years — since my early years of volunteering there as a teen,” Schodowski said. “Now, being in a position to help in more of a financial capacity, is something Shelving Inc., does happily.”

Schodowski started Benefit on the Bay in 1993 with a group of friends on a dock, eating pizza and dancing around an AM/FM radio, raising $1,400 for Capuchin. The event has grown every year since — including 2014 with 630 total attendees.

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit has long been a benefactor of Schodowski. In addition to Benefit on the Bay, Schodowski organizes fundraisers Concours D’Agostini in June and Bocci with the Bothers, which will host its 3rd annual event on Jan. 23, 2015, at Villa Penna on Hayes Road in Sterling Heights.

The 22nd Annual Benefit on the Bay is already confirmed for Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at MacRay Harbor.

Schodowski, along with brothers Joe (Shelving Inc.’s President), John (Shelving Inc.’s Vice President of Supply Chain) and brother-in-law to Jim Aiello (Shelving Inc.’s Vice President of Operations), purchased Shelving Inc., from their retiring father, Jack, who founded the company in 1960. Shelving Inc., annually gives 10 percent of its profits to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

Founded in 1929, Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves Metro Detroit by providing those in need with food, clothing and counsel, preparing an average of 2,000 meals per day.
