3 Strategies for Parental (and Student) Engagement

To strengthen parent engagement, Nexus Academy of Royal Oak, suggests three easy steps for parents to implement at home.

While research indicates that parental engagement positively impacts student achievement, there is a distinction between involving parents and engaging parents in learning; the latter has shown to have the greatest positive impact. There are many ways schools promote parental involvement. These activities range from volunteering and fundraising to providing parents with home-based learning activities supporting student achievement.

To strengthen parent engagement, local blended learning public school, Nexus Academy of Royal Oak, suggests three easy steps for parents to implement at home.

1. Plan field trips. Supplement existing learning lessons by planning field trips to fun and interesting locations. Head to the beach for an environmental sciences lesson or a Civil War battle site for a closer look at history. Tie in key words from previous lessons.

2. Switch up the learning environment. Whether at home or at a traditional school, learning in the same environment can get old quickly. Switch things up and keep your student engaged by venturing out to a nearby coffee shop or park to complete homework assignments. New environments will keep learning fresh.

3. Lead study groups. By studying together students not only have the added benefit of minimizing test anxiety, understanding different perspectives and absorbing information more quickly; they also are able to socialize and spend time with fellow classmates outside of the classroom. Coordinate a study group to encourage group discussions and eliminate procrastination.
