Detroit Police Officer Injured While Escorting VP Joe Biden

The vice president touted Detroit's "miraculous" recovery in a speech in downtown Detroit Thursday.

A Detroit police officer escorting Vice President Joe Biden’s motorcade in Detroit was injured in an automobile accident.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody told WJBK-TV that the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Medburry and Mt. Elliot stemmed from “operator error.” The injured officer, who was alert and communicating, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Biden is in Detroit to talk about the economy and transportation issues. The accident delayed his remarks, which were set to begin at 2:30, until 3 p.m.

He praised the Detroit’s “miraculous” recovery from the Great Recession and its recent bankruptcy.

“Detroit isn’t just an important city,” Biden said during his speech at the Detroit Department of Transportation headquarters, “it’s an iconic city.

“Detroit is resilient. It’s tough and defined by a work ethic that is unmatched by any place in the world,” the vice president said. “Detroit is off its back, off its knees, standing up again.”

Biden’s visit comes at a time when speculation is growing about whether the 72-year-old vice president will run for president as Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers continue to sink.
