An “ice house” surrounded by streets that have become treacherous skating rink. Neighbors of a home on Boston Street on Detroit’s west side told WJBK-TV that one of their cars was even frozen to the street.

Whoever was living at the house left sometime in November without informing the water department, according to the report. It’s unclear exactly when the pipes broke, but the site is spectacular – a scene similar to the ice caves that form on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The neighborhood association was alerted and put the wheels in motion to get the mess cleared up. The water department sent in heavy equipment to begin clearing the thick ice form the street.

It’s unknown if the century-old house can be saved. Neighbors fear prolonged exposure to moisture will weaken the floorboards and overall structure of the house.
