Summer Learning and Fun

We are pleased to announce that Andrea Lappin-Roth (Elementary Program) and Terry Flint (Secondary Program) will be leading our 2014 Summer Learning Program.  Andrea and Terry are busy working to identify potential staff and course offerings, one of which is a 3rd Grade Readiness class to prepare our students for state assessments.  Andrea Sanders is Director of Childcare Programs and coordinates Camp O'Fun and Safety Town. The following is a brief overview of each of the programs:

Elementary Summer School
As the summer season rapidly approaches, I would like to remind you of the summer learning opportunities that are available in the Grosse Pointe Public Schools. Summer school will run Tuesday – Thursday, July 8th  -  July 31st.

Summer school offers a variety of courses that are beneficial for elementary students including:  math and reading skills courses, academic strengthening courses, and extracurricular activities.  Highlights include F.A.S.T. Reading, Math skill-building, Art Exploration, Techno-Art Animation, and Music courses.  We also offer incoming 6th grade students advanced math preparation, step-up courses in reading and math, and study skills.

This year we are teaming up with Camp ‘O Fun to offer a supervised shuttle to transport students between programs.  The shuttle will leave Maire at the end of school day and take the kids to Ferry where they can enjoy the Camp ‘O Fun activities.

Each of these summer courses offer a chance for the elementary students in Grosse Pointe to solidify skills or to get a leg up before returning to school in the fall.  Enrollment will begin at the end of April and will continue through the end of June.

Secondary Summer School
Summer school offers a broad array of options including enrichment courses, on-line learning experiences and credit recovery opportunities.  In addition to a full program of required core academic courses, the following elective courses are also available to satisfy high school graduation requirements:  Expository Writing, Health Education, and Photography. Furthermore, Grosse Pointe offers four on-line summer experiences including Mythology, Explorations in Reading, Biology and Film Literature.  Each of these summer opportunities is a perfect chance for a student to recover credit, get ahead, improve a grade, or to enrich their high school experience.

On-Line enrollment begins April 15th and ends July 2nd.  On July 2nd, there will be a walk up registration option available for families without computer access.  Summer courses will begin at Grosse Pointe North High School July 7th and end on August 1st.  Further information and enrollment forms are available at www.gpschools.org/summerschool.

Camp O'Fun
Our day camp, located at Ferry Elementary School (748 Roslyn GPW, MI 48236), runs for ten weeks, beginning June 16 and ending August 22, 2014. We offer quality camp programming from 7:15 AM-6:15 PM Monday-Friday that includes fantastic events and parties, field trips, terrific daily activity options and, of course, our wonderful top-notch staff! Camp O’ Fun consists of two smaller camps that run alongside one another: Camp O’ Fun Playhouse and Camp O’ Fun Clubhouse.

The Playhouse is geared for incoming kindergarten through third graders. These campers will chose from a variety of hands-on, age-appropriate activities in sports, arts, sciences and more that promote team building, creative exploration and that foster a sense of independence.

Our Clubhouse camp is designed with our older campers in mind, specifically those entering 4th grade-middle school. This camp is designed with choices that encourage your camper to explore his or her own areas of interest. Clubhouse campers will select their daily activities from a series of clinics and sessions that encourage skill-based development, teamwork and decision-making. We can't WAIT for Camp O’ Fun 2014. Hope to see you there! You can participate one day, one week, or all summer. Pricing and more information about enrollment is online at www.gpschools.org
