Wow Writing Workshop President Kim Lifton Featured Speaker at Metro Detroit National College Fair

Attend one of two free sessions on writing the college essay next week in Novi!

Kim Lifton, a college application essay writing expert and president of Wow Writing Workshop, will be a featured speaker during the Metro Detroit National College Fair on Monday, March 30 and Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.

Lifton will deliver two presentations on “The Inside Scoop on the College Essay,” once Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. and again Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. The interactive presentations will address these commonly asked questions:

  • How important is the college essay?
  • How does the essay stack up against the different application elements, like GPA, test scores and recommendations?
  • What are some of the cornerstones of a good application essay?
  • What kind of help should I get, and what should I avoid?

The Metro Detroit National College Fair, sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling, will be open for students, high school groups and parents from 6 p.m. through 8 p.m. on Monday, and from 8:30 a.m. through noon on Tuesday.

“In these information sessions, we will talk about voice, choosing a topic, and how to stand out from the college application crowd,” Lifton said. “We will talk about how the college essay is increasing in importance as college admission becomes more competitive.”

An estimated 4,000 people are expected to attend the Metro Detroit National College Fair, one of several events scheduled throughout the country. College representatives from public and private colleges will be at the fair; students who attend can meet with college representatives and discuss admission procedures, financial aid opportunities and more.

“We teach students how to tell their stories in their own words, and in their own voices,” Lifton said. “We don’t write their stories for them; we don’t just edit their work. We teach them the process so they can do it themselves, and learn from it.”
