How to Build a Perfect Guinness

The local Irish pub in Hartland is busy preparing for the annual event where everyone gets to be Irish for a day.

O'Malley's Irish Pub and Restaurant will open at 8 a.m. on March 17, St. Patrick's Day, and will be serving their well-known Irish fare of corned beef hash and green eggs and ham.

The pub will also be serving plenty of green beer and of course, Guinness, an Irish staple beer. To pour a perfect glass of Guinness, however, takes patience and the correct tapper.

O'Malley's only uses their imported tapper when building a Guinness, according to O'Malley's bartender Heather Smith.

Smith also explains pouring the beer is really a two-step process that includes waiting and watching for the signiture dark beer to settle before filling the rest of the glass.

"To get the proper taste and the proper air and the proper mix of the beer," she said.

True Guinness fans are very specific about the pour of their beer, according to Smith.

Besides Guinness, the pub will also have drink specials for St. Patrick's Day and live music starting at 11 a.m.

There will be a $5 cover charge on Sunday and no one under 21 will be admitted. The Hartland Fire Department will also be on hand, offering safe rides home for a donation starting at 4 p.m.

• St. Practice Day on March 16 with music by Brent and Jeremy at 8 p.m.
