Hartland CPA Gives Tax Advice

Carrie Jellison of Jellison CPA Company offers advice for the upcoming tax season.

Did you know you know you can get money back from your taxes for license plate renewal fees? How about deductions for student loan interest or claiming a tuition credit for college-aged dependents?

These are all deductions that are commonly missed when people are preparing their own taxes, according to Carrie Jellison of the Hartland-based Jellison CPA Company.

"I think the most common error that I see from people who do their own returns are when they sell stocks or they move their money from one brokerage firm to another," she said. "They think of that as income and don't report that sale."

With April 15, the official tax filing day, rapidly approaching, Jellison recommends that people who are still waiting on certain documents or other paperwork, to still visit their tax preparer now with the information they do have, so the can process begin.

"So that when those documents do come in at the last minute, it's a much quicker process to get the return done," Jellison said.

People may also consider filing for an extension as well, according to Jellison who says there is no penalty

"So if people know they are getting a refund back, there's no reason why they can't file an extension," she said.

The Hartland CPA also reccomends that for people who know they are receiving a refund, to file early.
