2011 Year in Review: Hartland Sports

2011 produced both state champs and touching stories. What will you remember most?

It's been quite a year in Hartland sports on the field with district, state and even a world title. Below is a wrap-up by sport category. The No. 1 local story traffic-wise was as Hartland High School football coach in November.

  • ARCHERY: In the spring, the Hartland archery program captured while individuals Shelby Simonds in May and Emily Bee in October. 
  • ON THE DIAMOND: Boys baseball won , district and titles while girls softball , but . Baseball eventually .
  • HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: The boys and girls basketball team both won district titles in March as the girls and the boys advanced with . Both later lost during regional play when the girls and the boys to .
  • PRO BOWLING: Hartland's Mika Koivuniemi after becoming the first to reach the TV finals of the sports four major tournaments. He won one of those events, , and made headlines when he lost the U.S. Open title in the 10th frame after he missed a 10 pin. 
  • CROSS COUNTRY: The boys ran to as both the boys and girls , led by the top 10s of Sean Pengelly and Ian McGinn. The girls were paced by Avery Evenson, who was . 
  • EQUESTRIAN: The Hartland equestrian team continued its recent dominance of the sport with after a narrow three-point win over Oxford in October.
  • FATHER/SON DUO: Dad Mark and 10-year-old Nik Miskerik during power boat nationals in August, including a national championship trophy for Mark.
  • GIRLS LACROSSE: Hartland's team made , only to lose to eventual state champ Brighton.
  • HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING: The boys team won the with at the state tournament while the girls took the KLAA west for the first time as Kirsten Stroven .
  • ON THE SLOPES AND ICE: Both and made runs into the state finals in February while the Hartland Prep Hockey club in March.
  • HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: The wrestling team won , but lost in the state semifinals in February while its best individual wrestler, in March.
  • YOUTH SPORTS: Hartland's elementary wrestling club team won in February. Youth golfers captured in Livingston County league in August. And in football, a trio of teams in October.
  • BEYOND THE FIELD: Parents made the Hartland equestrian team's home coming dance special . A Deerfield Township man generated headlines for as she finished a half-marathon. Boys and girls lacrosse for a program that's designed to reduce bullying at the middle school while youth baseball/softball with a rare disease.
