The benefits of working together (mininggazette.com) — Houghton County commissioners are weighing whether to join a regional community corrections program that could bring new pretrial monitoring and treatment options to the local tri-county court system at no cost. The proposal would shift costs like electronic monitoring from defendants and counties to state grant funding, and open access to intensive treatment programs, including long-term substance abuse and domestic-violence services.
   

2. Hacked! (mininggazette.com) — Michigan Tech students and faculty in Houghton were caught up in a major hack of the Canvas learning system, where a cybercriminal group posted ransom notes and claimed to steal sensitive data. Instructure, Canvas’s parent company, says it has reached a deal to recover the data and is investigating, but Michigan Tech has not yet detailed how local users were affected.
   

3. Houghton Fire Department responds to debris fire behind fraternity house (keweenawreport.com) — Houghton firefighters quickly put out a late-night debris fire behind the Sigma Pi fraternity on College Avenue before it could spread up the hillside. City Fire Chief Eric James is reminding residents that debris burning is banned in Houghton, Houghton County currently has a burn prohibition, and only tightly regulated recreational fires in compliant fire pits are allowed.
   

4. Messages from Houghton County man sentenced for assault called 'unhinged' (wnmufm.org) — A Houghton County man has been sentenced to between 57 months and 10 years in prison for an assault charge after sending hundreds of disturbing messages to a woman while jailed. The sentence will run at the same time as a separate 6- to 20-year term for first-degree home invasion in another case.
   

5. Houghton Earns Softball Win, Tie v Calumet (keweenawreport.com) — Houghton’s softball team took a 13–6 win and a 5–5 tie against Calumet, with strong hitting from both sides and several unearned Gremlins runs. The roundup also lists today’s local matchups, including Hancock at Houghton softball and a multi-school golf meet featuring Houghton at Westwood, plus regional track, baseball, and pro-sports notes.
