The proposal, aimed at reducing deer damage to hardwoods, has sparked safety and ethical concerns from nearby residents while township leaders and city committees gather data and public feedback before any decision. 
2. Township of Kalamazoo considers becoming a city to avoid annexations (arcwestmichigan.com) — Kalamazoo Charter Township is exploring becoming a city to prevent annexation of key tax-generating areas like Beacon Hospital and the Kalamazoo Expo Center by nearby cities. Leaders will spend the rest of 2026 studying options, including a possible new relationship with Parchment, and promise any major change will go to township voters without raising taxes as the main goal.
3. Study finds wide-ranging positive effects of Kalamazoo Promise after 20 years (woodtv.com) — Kalamazoo's landmark Promise scholarship is being credited with boosting college attendance, stabilizing enrollment in Kalamazoo Public Schools, and even raising local home values two decades after its launch. A new Upjohn Institute report finds more than 9,000 students have used the benefit, with lower student debt and stronger housing construction, while program leaders now expand hands-on support to keep local scholars in school.
4. Employee of Kaiser Aluminum in Kalamazoo dies on the job, investigation underway (wwmt.com) — An employee at the Kaiser Aluminum plant in Kalamazoo died on the job this week, and the company says it is cooperating with local and federal investigators. The Midlink Business Park facility has arranged counseling for workers while officials, including Michigan's workplace safety agency, review what happened near the I-94 and South Sprinkle Road interchange.
5. 'I'm a little opposite': Prepared bystander pulls victims from rollover crash in Kalamazoo (wwmt.com) — A bystander on lunch break in Kalamazoo rushed from a Taco Bell to pull victims from a smoking, overturned car on Westnedge Avenue near Whites Road. Equipped with emergency tools and CPR training, he helped free several people before KDPS arrived; three occupants were hospitalized with reported minor injuries while police continue investigating the cause of Thursday's crash.
