Applying by that date also locks in priority consideration for scholarships and financial aid, giving local students earlier decisions and clearer information about how affordable WMU could be for them.
   

2. People's Food Co-op getting back on its feet after tumultuous 8 months (mlive.com) — Kalamazoo's People's Food Co-op is back under member-elected control after a judge validated a recall vote and ordered a new ratification election within 60 days. Interim leaders are racing to stabilize finances, rebuild inventory, and repair trust with vendors and shoppers as reserves have dropped sharply, even while sales have begun to rebound under the new management.
   

3. Arcadia Creek Festival Place renovations more expensive and have more environmental challenges (wkzo.com) — Renovations at Kalamazoo's Arcadia Creek Festival Place are facing sharply higher costs and unexpected environmental issues, delaying work until winter and stretching improvements potentially to 2031. City leaders are pursuing a $6.9 million grant and other funding so the northern portion can reopen for public and festival use as early as next spring and summer.
   

4. 7,000+ Kalamazoo County elementary students getting new shoes for fall at no cost (arcwestmichigan.com) — Hundreds of Kalamazoo elementary students are already getting brand-new athletic shoes, as a local nonprofit works its way through all 47 public elementary schools in Kalamazoo County this fall. The First Day Shoe Fund expects to provide more than 7,400 pairs at no cost, helping families stretch tight budgets while giving kids comfortable footwear they're proud to wear to class.
   

5. 'She was a beautiful soul': Family remembers Kalamazoo woman killed inside her home (wwmt.com) — A Kalamazoo mother of four was fatally shot inside her Reed Street home early Sunday, and police are still searching for answers. Family and neighbors are remembering her generosity and caregiving spirit while investigators ask anyone with information to contact KDPS or Kalamazoo Silent Observer to help solve the case and support her children.
