📰 News we're reading

1. 2 charged in Kentwood shooting that left 1 dead, 1 injured this week (mlive.com) — Kentwood police and prosecutors have charged a 22-year-old Grand Rapids man with murder and weapons offenses after a deadly Aug. 31 shooting on Kalamazoo Avenue that killed 25-year-old Juan Diego Cisneros and injured another person. A second Grand Rapids man is accused of lying to investigators, and both are being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility following their Sept. 1 arrests.

2. New policy brings consistency to 6-12 grading (schoolnewsnetwork.org) — Families in Kentwood Public Schools should know that middle and high school grading has been overhauled so grades mean the same thing across teachers and subjects. The new 70-30 grading split, added retake options, and removal of extra credit are designed to better reflect what students actually know and give them clearer paths to improve.

3. Vote for the Grand Rapids area's Thursday Night Hero from Week 2 football games (mlive.com) — East Kentwood quarterback Colin O’Connor is among several Grand Rapids-area standouts nominated for this week’s Thursday Night Hero fan vote after leading the Falcons to a 42-14 win over Byron Center. Local readers can cast unlimited online votes through Sunday night, with the winner announced Monday alongside other big performances from nearby schools.

4. Weingartz again partners with Feeding America West Michigan to Mow Down Hunger during Hunger Action Month (feedwm.org) — Kentwood residents are being asked to help fight local hunger as Feeding America West Michigan teams up again with equipment retailer Weingartz for the Mow Down Hunger challenge. From Sept. 16 to Oct. 14, Weingartz will match the first $15,000 in donations, potentially providing hundreds of thousands of meals for neighbors across West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

5. Pastor calls gun violence in Grand Rapids a 'state of emergency' (fox17online.com) — Recent gun violence in the Grand Rapids area now includes deadly shootings in nearby Kentwood, underscoring concerns about safety across southern Kent County. A local pastor is urging leaders to treat the situation like a state of emergency, while police emphasize that recent homicides are not random and urge residents to help reduce gun use in disputes.
