GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, occurs when stomach acid and/or bile frequently reflux back into the esophagus. Affecting up to 35 percent of the American population, GERD is a chronic digestive disease that can irritate the lining of your esophagus and cause ongoing heartburn.
The procedure, known as Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication, is done through the mouth. That means no incisions, no scars and less discomfort and a shorter recovery. The traditional laparoscopic fundoplication involves five or six small incisions in the abdomen.

“Many people experience heartburn from time to time, but when it occurs more than twice a week and disrupts your lifestyle, it may be time to seek medical help and consider surgical options,” says Gary Katz, D.O., St. John Macomb-Oakland surgeon.
TIF surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The surgical device is guided into the body through the mouth and advanced into the esophagus with the aid of video camera in the central shaft of the device. The surgeon operates the device to form and fasten several tissue folds to create an anti-reflux valve at the gastroesophageal junction, preventing reflux. Most patients go home the next day and can return to work and most normal activities within a few days

Dr. Katz says to date results with TIF have been very encouraging, but not all patients with medically resistant GERD are candidates. For more information please call Dr. Katz at St. John Providence Health at 248-546-2600.
