Census Says Macomb Is on the Grow

Just released, the 2010 U.S. Census numbers show the township's population has surged.

It's that time of the decade again.

Results from the 2010 census are trickling in, and it's good news for Macomb Township. The population has shot up 57.7 percent in the last decade, now at 79,580, up 29,102 from 2000's census, when the township had 50,478 residents. That's according to preliminary 2010 census data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget Tuesday.

Michael Koehs, township clerk, said officials anticipated the township's population would be in the 80,000 range. As for the spectacular growth, "it shows we still have the same desirable community," citing appeal factors such as the four solid school districts as well as the location, with the township being so close to shopping, dining establishments and entertainment. In addition, it's accessible, being close to M-59, the Van Dyke freeway and I-94, making commutes easier.

And while property values aren't what they used to be—"We've taken a beating just like everyone else has," Koehs said—on the plus side, he added, homes in Macomb Township are now more affordable for more people, so it's all too likely growth will only continue to spike.

Percentage-wise, Macomb Township hasn't had the biggest population boost statewide—Dexter's increased 75 percent, and New Baltimore's population surged 63.4 percent (from 7,397 to 12,084)—but the community is one of many in the northern Macomb County area to see numbers steadily rising. Other communities in the vicinity saw a climb as well, including Richmond (17.3 percent), Lenox Township (24.2 percent), Shelby Township (13.3 percent) and Washington Township (31.7 percent).

Macomb County's population, however, has continued to rise: In 2010 it boasted 840,978 residents, up 6.7 percent from 2000's population, when it was 788,120.

The majority of the growth has been in the north end of the county. In the south end, numbers dipped somewhat, mostly in single-digit ranges: with St. Clair Shores and Mount Clemens seeing the biggest drops, 5.4 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively.

The county's growth is in contrast to statewide trends. Over the last 10 years, has declined by .5 percent, now down to 9,883,640.
