'Love Bus' Makes Stop at Immanuel Lutheran

The Love Bus is a key part of Project Compassion, a transportation-based ministry that helps older handicapped nursing home residents participate in various activities and events in the Detroit area.

That wasn't any ordinary bus parked in the lot this morning. It was one of the mint-green Love Buses that serves as the root of Project Compassion's ministry.

Organized as a Christian ministry in 1972, Project Compassion uses a small fleet of specialized buses to transport older handicapped residents from nursing homes to different activities in the Detroit area. Each Love Bus is equipped with wheelchair lifts that can carry up to 16 wheelchairs and 16 ambulatory passengers on various group outings.

The Rev. Chad Speller, pastor of Project Compassion, visited Immanuel Lutheran on Wednesday to share the story of the organization and allow students to tour one of the "Love Buses" that make the ministry possible.

β€œToday it was amazing to see all of our children surround this β€˜Love Bus,’" said Bob Christian, Immanuel Lutheran principal, in a prepared statement. "They all seem to become excited as they do something for someone else. It is for this reason and also the need for us to show Christ’s love to others that we always give our chapel offerings to different types of ministries that show that love.”

The students at Immanuel Lutheran will collect money through November to support Project Compassion.
