A family friendly celebration of Earth Day will be held at
Maybury Park on Saturday, April 20th from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Friends of
Maybury State Park and Maybury State Park staff. Children can participate in a kite building
and flying event. Other activities
include seed planting, environmentally friendly product displays,
demonstrations about the Maybury State Park bluebird nesting program, and a
Monarch butterfly display. Bring your
picnic lunch and enjoy an afternoon at the park after the event. Picnic areas are available in the park along
with playground facilities. For those
who enjoy walking, there are many trails within the park. Special trails include the nature trail and
the history trail. Both of these trails
provide self-guided walks with permanent signage describing features along the
trail.
There is no charge for the Earth Day activities. However, entry to any state park requires an
$11 Recreation Passportf. The Recreation Passport can be used to enter
any state park in Michigan.
The first Earth Day in the U.S. was celebrated on April 22
of 1970 and featured national teach-ins on the environment at university
campuses across the country. This first
Earth Day was intended to raise awareness about the importance of environmental
issues. In 1990, Earth Day began to be
celebrated by nations across the globe.
