Bites Nearby: Hearty American Fare in Livonia

Known for its consistently good food and large portions, J. Alexander's at 19200 Haggerty Rd. in Livonia is always a popular spot for lunch or dinner.

The atmosphere is dark and inviting and as you pass by the semi-open kitchen on the way to your seat there are typically large flames shooting out of the grill as burgers and steaks are being cooked to order. The service is top-notch and beverages are often refilled before you even have a chance to get near the last sip.

Seasonal guacamole and spinach con queso dip for $11 are among the favorite appetizers here. There are a number of salad options including the house “Alex” salad with bacon, cheese, tomatoes, cumcumbers and croutons for $10. My personal favorite is the “Cypress" salad which comes with chopped crispy chicken tenders for $14. There are an assortment of burgers including a veggie burger for $11 to a prime rib sandwich for $18.

All come served with a mountain of slim cut fries or chunky mashed potatoes if you choose to make a substitution. Entree choices range from cilantro shrimp served with coleslaw for $19 to filet mignon with Bearnaise for $29.

Desserts are tempting and huge and the carrot cake for $7 is highly recommended. It is a one layer square cut piece served warm that literally melts in your mouth it is so delicious. J. Alexanders has a full bar and a wine menu with several varieties served by the glass.

Open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Also open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
