Beware of the Dog Park

The sonorous voice of Cecil Baldwin in Welcome to Night Vale has risen to the top of iTunes top podcasts this week. The character tells the stories of a small fictional town in New Mexico. From the forbidden dog park to the perfectly coiffed hair of Carlos the scientist, Night Vale provides a strange and refreshing commentary on the town of Night Vale as well as our own world.

Welcome to Night Vale is a creation of Commonplace Books. The podcast is broadcasted twice a month, and can be listened to for free on iTunes and Libsyn.

The show is structured as a local radio broadcast hosted by Baldwin, voiced by Joseph Fink who writes the episodes along with Jeffery Cranor. Cecil comes off as a devoted reporter who is obedient of the City Council and the Sheriff’s secret police, but curious about life, and often questions the parameters of reality while easily accepting the odd things that happen around his town.

Baldwin himself is an interesting character. While there are no physical descriptions of anyone on the show except Carlos the scientist, fans of the show have come up with several ideas for all the characters, as is the intent of the show. Cecil can be described by his words—by his crush on Carlos and intense dislike of rival town Desert Bluffs, as well as his cat that lives in the radio station bathroom.

If you like to listen to interesting stories of the bizarre and have a long drive ahead for a last summer vacation, Welcome to Night Vale may be the podcast for you.
