Novi Library Staff Picks: Haunted Films for the Whole Family

Meghan Ebbitt, librarian extraordinaire and Youth film expert highlights some spooky films for the whole family.

Halloween is creeping up around the corner waiting to make its move just in time to jump out when you least expect it.  With that in mind it’s best to be prepared by locking the doors, shuttering the windows, and having a movie marathon.  Our resident youth film expert and Information Services Librarian Meghan Ebbitt has some haunted picks that are fun for the entire family.

The Dog Who Saved Halloween

Zeus and the Bannisters have moved into a new house, just in time for Halloween.  Everything seems to be going well until they notice strange lights and sounds coming from neighbor Ell's house.  When George takes it upon himself to find out what is going on, and enlists the help of a very unlikely pair, a surprising partnership forms.  After the trio and George's wife get trapped in the spook house, only Zeus is left to save Halloween.

Halloweentown

In a place called Halloweentown, good and evil look very different than one might expect.  Thanks to a visit from Grandmother Aggie, Marnie and her family's tradition of ignoring the Halloween holiday are about to change in the extreme.  It seems that Marnie's mother Gwen has been hiding a big secret from her three children--all of them possess supernatural powers.  A brewing crisis between good and evil in the alternate world Halloweentown soon pulls the entire family through a portal and into an intense battle against ghouls, goblins and the warlock Kalabar.

Hocus Pocus

When three outlandishly wild witches are accidentally conjured up by pranksters, they return from 17th century Salem and set out to cast a spell on the town, but first they must outwit three kids and a talking cat.  Bonus trivia – Aside from the big name stars such as Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker, Hocus Pocus also features a performance from actor Doug Jones whose name and visage you might not recognize for good reason.  Jones is a master at manipulating his appearance so much that you might not notice he has appeared as all these creations

Monster House

A group of kids discover that a neighborhood house is actually a monster. To solve the mystery of the house they must go inside it, before it takes everyone that crosses its path.  Bonus trivia – Monster House was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and one of the co-writers Dan Harmon was also behind the fantastic NBC comedy and soon to be cult classic “Community.”

Of course these picks are just the tip of the iceberg; you can view the complete list of Meghan’s spooky movies for the whole family here.  In case you’re looking for something a bit more adult and a lot more terrifying, don’t fear we have a list of picks that will get you through the night once the kids have gone to bed.
