The Best School Supply of All...
Is the start of a new school year wearing you down and lightening your wallet? There is a school supply that provides a wide variety of media, resources, and entertainment—free!
After signing multiple forms and checks for school registration, experiencing the sights and sounds of the mall while clothes shopping, and digging through the bargain bins for discounted yellow pencils and loose leaf paper, I realized I had spent a small fortune and my kids had not yet even started the school year. I thought to myself, there really has to be a better way...something that can help kids succeed at school without the fees, costs and hassle.
Then I realized there is a school supply that provides books, movies, computers, classes and entertainment for free: a library card.
Since signing up for my first library card MANY years ago, I have enjoyed borrowing more than my fair share of books. But today's libraries offer so much more. The not only has standard print books, but also audio books, downloadable books, large print books and best sellers.

If you can't find a specific book, you can search from libraries all over the state and have the book sent to your library. In fact, if you make special arrangements at the library, you can even have your book waiting in an after-hours locker or at the drive-up window!
A Novi Public Library card also allows you to download free music to your MP3 player and free books to your electronic reader. Besides books and music, your library card also provides access to more than 75 different research databases focusing on business, science and education. For students, these databases offer free tutoring, test preparation and research material from their home or school computer—without even having to go to the library.

But many students like to go to the library for academic and social reasons. An easy walk from the high school, many students make use of the Teen Stop, which features gaming stations and young adult media. These students also take advantage of the free Wi-Fi, computers, cafe, group study rooms and social spaces. Students can also participate in a wide variety of library programs ranging from book discussion groups to crafts to current movies.
So this September, I highly encourage you to venture out for just one more errand and sign-up for a library card for your student—the most valuable school supply of all.
