Couple Channel 'Star Wars' at Motor City Comic Con Wedding

Here are five things you need to know about dedicated "Star Wars" fans' wedding and Comic Con in general.

NOVI, MI – This is some serious “Star Wars” worship: Olivia Vance, of White Lake, and her fiance, David Waite, of the Bay Mills Indian Community on the Upper Peninsula, have inscribed a famous exchange between Princess Leia and Han Solo on wedding bands they’ll slip on one another’s fingers Sunday at the Motor City Comic Con, which runs all weekend at Novi’s Suburban Collection Showplace.

Vance’s ring is inscribed, “I love you.” Waite’s says, “I know,” according to a report by the Detroit Free Press. The memorable exchange is from “The Empire Strikes Back.”

“We are huge, huge ‘Star Wars’ nerds,” Vance said, explaining the couple’s decision to have a public wedding ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday n the main floor of the venue. The couple met through Facebook and soon learned of their mutual “Star Wars” fandom.

Vance will dress as Padme Amidala, played by Natalie Nortman, in the prequel trilogy, and Waite will dress as Padme’s groom, Anakin Skywalker. If it all works out, local members of the 501st Legion, a global “Star Wars” fan group whose members were replicas of the franchise’s villains at charity events, will escort Vance and her attendants.

Motor City Comic Con, which opens Friday, features more than 300 comic book artists, writers and dozens of actors from television and film. Here are four other things to know about the Motor City Comic Con:

Back to ‘Back to the Future’: Toyota’s reimagined version of Marty McFly’s dream truck, unveiled last year as part of the the 30th anniversary celebration of the beloved “Back to the Future” movie franchise, will be displayed. Actress Lea Thompson, who played various incarnations of Lorraine McFly in all of the franchise’s films, will be on hand as well.

Where to Park Marty McFly's Dream Truck: Finding a place to park Marty McFly's or your own dream vehicle will be a challenge. If arriving early to grab a spot in the Suburban Showplace parking lots isn’t an option, you can park in grass lots along Grand River Avenue. Or, better, park at Novi High School, 24062 Taft Road, and pay $2 for a shuttle ride to the venue.

How to Avoid Long Lines: This is the 27th anniversary of Michigan’s top comic event, and more than 50,000 people are expected over the three days. To avoid long lines, buy tickets here and get in the doors a half hour before the event.

Top Celebrities to Spot: Comic Con is a great place for celebrity watching. Among those of note are WWE wrestling legend Ric Flair and The Four Horseman, who will be at Comic Con on Saturday and Sunday: Adam West and Burt Ward of TV’s “Batman,” Joe Bernthal of Netflix’s “Daredevil”; and Lena Headey of HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
