Iron Chef Competition Benefits Gleaners

On Thursday, Sept. 22, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, together with accounting firm Baker Tilly, are hosting the first Iron Chef competition in Oakland County. Bordine’s Nursery in Rochester Hills is the site for this culinary battle to help raise funds for Gleaners’ mission to feed hungry men, women and children.

Jeremy Kalmus, executive chef of No.VI Chophouse in Novi will compete against his brother Jaime Kalmus, executive chef of Zazios in Birmingham. The competitors must use a secret ingredient to create an appetizer, entrée and dessert.

Food writer Annabel Cohen, corporate chef Chris Hessler of Kruse & Muer Restaurants, and co-president of Bordine’s Nursery Corey Bordine will score each dish on taste, creativity and presentation. Iron Chef guests will be the judges of a special dish prepared by the chefs, the top vote-getter winning the night’s Fan Favorite title.

Guests have the opportunity to sample an array of hors d’oeuvres and desserts from local restaurants, enjoy beverages and bid on silent auction items. Performance painter Dave Santia of Clinton Township will amaze the crowd when he cranks up some classic rock and paints a large portrait in minutes. His artwork will be auctioned to support Gleaners.
