Over the past 10 days, Novi Police have arrested three drivers who may qualify for enhanced charges under Michigan's "super drunk" law:
- On March 1, an officer conducting traffic enforcement at I-96 and Novi Road stopped a vehicle he clocked at 90 miles per hour in a 70-mile-per-hour zone. According to the report, the officer noticed a strong odor of intoxicants while speaking with the driver, whose speech was slurred. A preliminary breath test showed the driver's blood alcohol level was .19, which is more than twice the .08 legal limit.
- On March 3, officers on patrol on west Pontiac Trail stopped a vehicle at the Springlake intersection, after observing erratic driving. The report indicated that a preliminary blood test showed the driver's blood alcohol level was .178, which is more than twice the .08 legal limit.
- On Feb. 25, an officer stopped a vehicle traveling south on M-5 west of Haggerty after watching the driver cross the white fog line and travel extremely close behind a truck in the same lane. According to the report, the officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol while speaking with the driver, and a preliminary breath test showed the driver's blood alcohol level was .17, which is more than twice the .08 legal limit.
According to the Michigan State Bar website, drivers with a blood alcohol level of .17 or more are subject to increased penalties and license sanctions, and will be required to undergo some type of alcohol treatment program.
