A 38-year-old Florida man is dead after shooting himself in a hotel room at the Extended Stay America in Novi, police say.

According to Assistant Police Chief Jerrod Hart of the Novi Police Department, guests and management at the hotel called police around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, reporting hearing a gun shot.

According to Hart, the shot was fired from a first floor hotel room and went through four adjoining rooms. No one else was injured, but they "were a little shaken up," Hart said.

Police arrived on the scene and evacuated guests in the area near the room. Police tried contacting the man in the room that the gunshot came from, but were not hearing a response.

Special response teams from Novi and West Bloomfield used a camera to look in the window of the room and discovered the dead body.

According to Hart, the man was originally from the Detroit area and had been staying at the hotel for about three months.
