West Nile Virus Reported in Southeast Michigan

If you see sick or dead crows, blackbirds, raptors and other birds, alert the Department of Natural Resources.

The first West NIle virus cases of the season have been reported in Michigan.

Three crows found dead in Ingham County earlier this month tested positive for the virus, the Associated Press reports.

State officials are encouraging residents to apply bug repellant during peak mosquito biting periods, generally at dusk or dawn. They’re also urged to drain standing water – perfect breeding areas for mosquitoes – around their homes.

Mosquitoes transmit the virus, which can sometimes cause a fatal neurological illness. Most people show no symptoms.

Anyone who sees sick or dead crows, blackbirds, owls, hawks or other birds should alert the Department of Natural Resources so they can be tested for the virus.
