Girl Scouts Troop 70430 Celebrate their Little Free Library with a Ribbon Cutting at the Crossings Rainbow Park

Girl Scout troop 70430 celebrate their Little Free Library with a ribbon cutting at the Crossings Rainbow park

On Sunday, Oct 23, a group of Rochester Girl Scout Cadettes unveiled their Little Free Library at Rainbow Park in the Crossings Subdivision located in Rochester. They celebrated with doughnuts and cider, along with an autumn themed craft. In addition to the ribbon cutting ceremony of the Little Free Library, the cadettes had a book drive for the Pontiac School District.

Girl Scout Cadettes, Anna Buccilli, Lauren Pilcher, and Ava Randazzo from troop 70430 are 7th graders from Van Hoosen Middle school, and have been working towards earning their Silver award for the past year. The requirement to earn the Silver Award is to make a change for the better in the community, and it is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

Choosing the Little Free Library was very inspiring to the girls because they love to read and wanted to promote literacy in their neighborhood. A Little Free Library is usually a wooden cabinet that holds books, and acts like a free book exchange. You can get as creative and grand as you wish or as simple and small as you desire, and it is usually found in a public setting for the whole community to enjoy.

Once the cadettes decided on their project, they chose a location for their Little Free Library at the Crossings Rainbow Park, had it approved by the subdivision board, and finally registered it at littlefreelibrary.org. They then began to collect books, fundraise for building materials by doing chores, babysitting, and recycling bottles; designed the library, created a budget and timeline, purchased building materials, built and painted the library, organized a grand opening, and finally celebrated and enjoyed all their hard work with neighbors and friends.
