History of Michigan Newspapers Traveling Exhibit at Orion Library

Now through the end of April

The exhibit, The History of Michigan Newspapers, is on display at the Orion Township Public Library now through the end of April.

The Clarke Historical Library celebrated the 200th anniversary of Michigan’s first newspaper’s publication by developing a traveling exhibit around the history of our state’s newspapers.

“We offer a variety of educational experiences for our patrons, and this exhibit will be of interest to those who fondly recall when newspapers were an integral part of daily life in America, as well as those who may have always gathered their news digitally,” said Head of Adult Services, Beth Sheridan. “This exhibit is a look into the newspaper industry’s rich history, and highlights an important part of Michigan’s history!”

On August 31, 1809 the The Michigan Essay: or the Impartial Observer, appeared on the streets of Detroit. It was a small paper of only four pages, and a very short-lived enterprise, but those few pages opened one of the most important windows on Michigan and its people. Americans, then and now, learned about their world, exercised their democratic rights, discovered what was happening in their community, and planned their weekly shopping trips all from the same source at the same time.

Please stop by and view The History of Michigan Newspapers traveling exhibit anytime the library is open. Save the date for a detailed presentation and tour about the exhibit by Frank Boyles, director of The Clarke Historical Library, on Thursday, April 6 at 6:30p.
