Lake Orion Senior is a MHSAA Scholar-Athlete

Dana Schrauben of Lake Orion High School is one of 13 Class A winners of the $1,000 scholarship.

On Tuesday the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) announced the Class A winners of its Scholar-Athlete Award and Dana Schrauben of Lake Orion High School is one of the 13 recipients.

Overall, 32 student athletes from all school classifications combined receive a $1,000 college scholarship from this Farm Bureau Insurance sponsored award. Alex Taylor, Hannah Lee and Alexa Giovanatti of Adams High School were finalists.

According to the MHSSA release, Schrauben played three years of basketball and volleyball in high school and will be playing varsity soccer for her fourth year this spring. In addition to this award, Schrauben received her volleyball league’s Sportsmanship Award this year and has earned academic all-state recognition. Along with being active in athletics, she has shown leadership by chairing various school projects and is an active volunteer not only as a member of the National Honor Society, but by volunteering with the Special Olympics and heading local volunteer projects.

In the essay Schrauben wrote to win the MHSSA scholarship, she wrote inspiring words about sportsmanship.

“Sportsmanship is about being truly unselfish and playing the game for more than winning or championship titles. It’s about doing what you love, surrounded by people you love, playing for the joy that the game brings you,” she wrote.

Her plans after graduation are to attend Michigan State University and pursue a secondary education degree with Spanish and mathematics being her core study topics. Schrauben, along with her fellow scholarship recipients, will be honored during halftime of the Class C boys basketball final game at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing on March 24.
