OCHN recognizes the impact of war on mental health
Oakland Community Health Network recognizes the impact that war may have on mental health and understand the need for support.

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (March 21, 2022) – The Russian attack on the Ukraine currently may be causing additional stress, especially on Americans with families in the Ukraine. Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) recognizes the impact that war may have on mental health and understands the need for support.
With the fear of uncertainty and the drastic spread of information on social media, individuals and families’ mental health is affected. Including the family members of those in the armed services concerned about the potential United States involvement. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) when situations arise involving conflicts throughout the world, “Ten percent of the people who experience traumatic events will have serious mental health problems.”
OCHN offers these tips for people impacted by the Ukraine crisis:

Express feelings: Whether you have direct or indirect ties with the communities in the Ukraine, it is important to express your feelings in a healthy way. It is okay to feel anxious but be sure to express these feelings instead of avoiding or hiding them.
Take time to listen to each other: Others may be masking their true feelings. Be open to family and friends by listening and talking to each other as a way of coping. This eliminates behaviors or feelings that others may be too afraid to talk about.

Practice gratitude: It is a good time to be grateful for what you have that keeps you grounded. This helps to distract yourself from negativity that may surround you. Limit your social media / news consumption throughout the day. It is sometimes easy to lose hope but consider doing a favorite activity to keep yourself positive.
