Teen Code Video Games at the Orion Library

Visit orionlibrary.org for More Teen Programs

Over the summer, several teens participated in a six session course at the Orion Library to learn to design their own video games. The finished game will be available for checkout from the library this fall.

The participants used a Python based coding language called Ren’py to code their games. They created artwork using a variety of resources, from professional Wacom art tablets, to MS Paint, Photoshop, and creative commons material.

The yet untitled video game consists of four separate “visual novel” style stories, each developed by a different participant. The game genres include a puzzle RPG, action/adventure stories, and a dating sim.

The library was provided with funding for the program from the Michigan Library Association after Teen Services Librarian, Dan Major, won a grant competition at the 2017 annual conference in Lansing. Funds were used to purchase professional design software and hardware that are now available for public use in the library’s computer lab. Major will be conducting a poster session detailing the program during this year’s conference on October 18, 2018.
