3 Goslings in Macomb Co. Test Positive for Bird Flu
Although the risk of human infection is low, the avian influenza virus can be devastating to free-ranging and domestic poultry.

Three goslings in Macomb County have tested positive for bird flu, making these the first confirmed cases of the avian flu virus in the state, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

The Canadian Geese goslings carrying H5N2 avian influenza were found in Sterling Heights last week, the report stated. Bird flu cases have been confirmed in 20 other states this year, the report added.
Humans run a low risk of being infected by birds carrying the virus, but populations of free-range and domestic poultry can be devastated if they become infected, the report. Almost 47 million birds in more than 200 Midwest chicken and turkey farms have succumbed to avian influenza since this year’s first confirmed U.S. case was reported in March in Minnesota, the report added.
