BREAKING: 2 Detroit Police Officers Hurt in Shoot-Out

Two police officers were taken to an area hospital with gunshot wounds.

Two police officers sustained minor injuries during what the Detroit Police Chief James Craig described as a “fire fight” that could have had more serious consequences.

The gunfire on Detroit’s east side came after a police chase near Interstate 94 and Moross Road by officers responding to a report of a stolen vehicle, according to media reports.

When officers stopped the vehicle, a female passenger reportedly jumped out. The driver then took off with in the vehicle at a high rate of speed. Police Chief James Craig described the chase as short, but intense, according to WDIV-TV.

The suspect allegedly drove about a block before getting out of the vehicle with a gun and firing several shots at officers.

A bullet grazed the leg of one officer, who was transported to a hospital. He was conscious and talking and sustained non-life threatening injuries. A second officer also sustained a gunshot wound, WXYZ-TV reports. That officer’s injuries were also reportedly minor.

The suspect was shot several times by officers and also is hospitalized. The female passenger who jumped out of the vehicle is in custody, according to the reports.

“It was certainly a fire fight,”Craig told WDIV. “The suspect engaged our officers, and they responded. They feared for their life, and they responded.”
