Busch's, Fresh Thyme Both Poised for Canton

A public hearing will be held Feb. 23 to hear comments on Busch's request for a liquor license to serve beer, wine inside store.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Two grocers — Busch’s Fresh Food Market and Fresh Thyme Farmers Market — are expected to open within months of one another in Canton Township.

Three years after it was given approval, Ann Arbor-based Busch’s Fresh Food Market is still months away from opening a store near Canton Center and Cherry Hill roads. It could open in the fall of 2016, The Canton Observer reports.

THE Canton Township Board of Trustees has set a public hearing for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, to take comments on a request for a liquor license from Busch’s, which wants to serve beer and wine inside the store, possible in a cafe setting, as well as offer it during special events.

Competition from Fresh Thyme, a Phoenix-based specialty-farmers market hybrid that has four other Michigan locations, could come in spring 2017 with the construction of a 28,709-square foot store on Morton Taylor north of Ford.

The Board of Trustees approved plans for the niche grocery store at a meeting Tuesday. Fresh Thyme’s trademark offerings include natural, organic produce, hormone-free meats and fresh seafood.

Fresh Thyme Farmers Market has stores in Troy, Rochester Hills, Northville and East Lansing, according to the company’s website. A store is under construction in Ypsilanti Township, and another is set to open in Grand Rapids this winter, MLive.com reports,

Busch’s has 15 stores in the Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor areas.
