Canton Dog Park Ribbon Cutting Set

Dog and their owners are invited to participate and register to use Canton's new 5-acre off-leash park.

Canton Township's off-leash dog park opened in spring but will get an official ribbon cutting ceremony from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. People and dogs are invited to attend.

The park is on Denton Road, just north of Cherry Hill Road and across from the Canton Fire Station No. 3.

The 5-acre off-leash dog park provides separate sections for large dogs 20 pounds or more and smaller breeds under 20 pounds. The park is open from dawn to dusk; the double-gated entry will be kept locked when the park is closed.

"The dog park is a wonderful addition to the Canton community keeping with our commitment of providing open green spaces and areas where residents and visitors can interact and enjoy the outdoors," said Abe Vinitski, the township's park and golf supervisor, in a statement released by the township. "We're delighted that so many individuals put their time and effort into this project because they believe the dog park would be a popular and beneficial asset for the whole community."

The 5-acre dog park resulted from a combined effort by Friends of the Canton Dog Park volunteers, businesses, Wayne County and township officials.

Canton resident Woojin Ro's Yorkshire terrier, Cheeto, recently became the 1,000 member of the Canton Dog Park and was awarded a gift bag to mark the occasion. "Cheeto really likes to play with other dogs and socialize in a positive environment," noted Ro. "It's great to have a large outdoor area so close to home for him to visit on a regular basis."

This grand opening celebration is sponsored by the Friends of the Canton Dog Park, Canton Township and International Transmission Company. Overflow parking for this event will be at Preservation Park, 500 N. Ridge Rd.

The Canton Township Clerk's office is accepting membership applications for the park. Annual fees are $25 for residents and $50 for non-residents and are good for three dogs per family. All dogs must be at least 4 months old, have all required shots and a current Canton dog license. Dog park rules and forms for registration and license are online at Cantonfun.org.
